She used to be a sad boring little tray in a corner of a thrift store... but I liked its shape, and decided to transform it into a much more glamorous butterfly.
Not that I know much about different kinds of wood, but fortunately this piece still bore the rests of a sticker that said it is made out of maple timber. Nice one, but that poor wood had been given several coats of dark stain which seriously contributed to its gloomy looks.
Away I took the sadness and painted it all white; then sanded some specific areas to let the dark wood show and make a nice contrast. It also highlights the lines in the carved piece of wood -and gives that 'old' effect that I find so attractive.
The 'body' of the butterfly is a rescued cast-brass cover for an old cabinet door lock.. The knob was already broken, so I trimmed the remnants of the hinge, then sanded and polished it. The antenna are made out of a vintage copper bangle, cut into two and stretched a little bit... And voilà the result: such a bombastic victorian bug!
It measures 25 x 15cm, so it's perfect to rest the keys, coins, earrings and so.
Fiu, fiu, aquí la fánnummeréin secundada por la nummerzwái (o por ahí), aclamando tumultuosamente, qué buena idea, qué bonito t'ha quedao, ole que ole!!!!
