Fruit Crate Chest & Coffee Table

Old fruit crates are simply gorgeous. This must be the fourth time I rescue one to transform it into a chest, by means of adding a lid to it. The crate is from the 50s, with interesting red lettering on the sides that gave me the idea to match the lid and the inside with a self-made brownish red tone. The whole piece has also been varnished and polished to get a smooth, satin finish. The small but sturdy casters are white, and both the hinges and clasp are chromed to add to the industrial feel.

The final result does not only look good, but is also highly practical as it can also be used as a spare seat or even a coffee table, perfect for a small living room.

Measures: 55x 35cm, 38cm high
Check all the details in the pictures below!
Some close-ups:

A selection of pictures taken during the making process: Sanding the crate (after a deep clean up and the wood treatment, not shown), then painting the inside with several coats of a self-made deep red tone
Cutting the pine boards where the casters will be attached, varnishing the crate
Then, the future lid of the chest: cutting the floor boards to measure and rounding the edges
Filling the gap between the boards, painting the top surface
Distressing, varnishing (not shown) and finally polishing the surface
Final touches: here, fastening the clasp. (Hinges and casters would come afterwards, not shown)
