It involved quite a lot of hours to restore -as the wood had been seriously damaged in some areas, and a few days more to transform its dated look into a shabby-chic, whimsical piece, with a dark stained top in nice contrast with the off-white, distressed structure. Totally worth the effort!
Here there are some pictures the happy customer sent of the finished piece looking good and fresh in its new home, I think it blends in perfectly well with the decoration and that gorgeous floor.
And here are a bunch of shots taken during the works: the table was so huge that it barely fit in my narrow workshop, and more than once I had to kneel on the floor or contort around it to reach certain areas, ha ha.
First, dismantling and general fixing,
Then, sanding off the ugly varnished table top and wings,
Treating the wood and filling the holes one by one once it healed,
Mixing the self-made off-white enamel tone, painting the first layer
After the three coats of paint dried, distressing the surface to enhance the lovely carvings and add interest to the piece,
Varnishing and polishing the structure for protection and a smooth, satin finish
Then, it was the time for the top surface: I applied several thin layers of mahogany and dark stain,
Doing the same for the extensions -and also varnishing then polishing the whole surface. Done!
