This colourful tray is made out of the brim of a vintage tambourine! It already had a cherry red melamine finish, so I chose a similar tone for the handmade paper that would cover the base of the tray.
Also, I painted the bottom and all the trimming in black to gain contrast in the brim.
Following the same concept, and to make the paper pattern more interesting, I applied black watercolour to it: as it just got sucked in the areas without lines (that are kind of 'waxed'), these came out in a nice, uneven way!
The whole surface is protected with a clear, highly shiny varnish that creates a lavish, lacquered-like effect.
A picture of the making process, while applying watercolour 'tint' to the base paper (note that the paper is already stuck to the bottom surface, but I didn't cut it till I finished the 'darkening' stage and coats of varnish, in order to get a perfect trim)
The Olé tray is 30,5cm in diameter, and 5cm high
